The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
