Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
