The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The speculation around the recent awards show was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, letting players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
